Add to the fray
Feb. 5th, 2005 05:45 pmI attended Emerald City ComiCon with Jason today. It's been long time since I've been to a con of this type (PAX being a con of an entirely different type), and I had a great time. By far the highlight of the day was discovering Camilla d'Errico at the Qew Publishing booth. I was absolutely blown away by some prints that she had of several of her watercolor paintings. They are promotions for her upcoming comic Burn, and they were so beautiful that I was unable to resist buying one. In fact, I'm going to end up spending even more money because I've decided that I will have to frame it. No thumbtacks for this beauty. Later in the day, having walked around the con for a number of hours, I had to return to her booth to let her know that I was more impressed with her work than anything else I'd seen there. She seemed both a little embarrassed and appreciative of the compliment, and then she drew a sketch for me, for which I gave her another $10. I rarely buy single issues of comics, but I will definitely be watching for Burn.
Some other cool things were getting to see Jhonen Vasquez, creator of Johnny the Homicidal Maniac, Squee, and Invader Zim; Phil Foglio, writer and artist of Girl Genius, probably best known for his comics in Dragon Magazine back in the 80's; spending some time talking with the guys from Oni and telling them that they're putting out some of the best books on the market these days; meeting Michel Gagné and buying an autographed (complete with sketch) copy of his Insanely Twisted Rabbits book; and just getting to hang out with Jason and do a lot of talking all day. He's rapidly becoming one of my new favorite people to chill and shoot the breeze with.
