The scarlet fever burns my soul

It had been a long time coming; I've wanted one for years, and when I got my promotion/raise earlier this year, I made the decision to save up some money for a few months to finally make the purchase. The main delay lately had simply been that I wasn't sure what it was that I wanted to buy. In the end, the choices were narrowed down to either the 15" Dell Inspiron or the 13.3" Macbook.

I had decided in advance that I didn't want or need this new computer to do anything fancy; my desktop is still quite powerful (relatively speaking), and I don't see it going away anytime soon. Gaming, graphic manipulation, music/video editing, etc. is all (in my opinion) much more easily done on a desktop anyway, unless you're lugging around a mouse, keyboard, external speakers, and so on, in which case what's the point of the laptop anyway? More than anything else, I simply wanted to be able to write and read things digitally without being tied to my desk.

In the end, I ended up getting the Macbook. Physically, the design of the hardware itself is simply superior to any pc laptop I've seen, and since I don't need it to do anything fancy, I'm not worried about needing to upgrade it. I'm hoping this means that the general stability that Macs are said to have will see me through many years of use with this computer. [livejournal.com profile] bookishelaine's educator's discount also put the price down very close to a Dell with a comparable build (within about $100). Thanks, Dawn!

It's not without its drawbacks, of course. Though I've used the Mac OS off and on for the past 9 years, I'm far more familiar with Windows, so there is some re-learning of certain principals involved. Most of the software I've purchased over the last 8 years is also useless on the Mac, unless I install Boot Camp, which I am loathe to do unless it is absolutely necessary. Also, while I've been neutral in the platform wars for a very long time, I find Apple's general attitude (as displayed more than anywhere else in their tv commercials) to be infuriatingly smug and arrogant, which has long made me want to give them as little financial support as possible.

I played around with it for quite a while last night, though, and I think that overall I'm going to be happy with my purchase. The end.

The guy that runs the DnD game i play in on tuesdays is the guy in charge of the MU computer store (which apparently has a nice deal with apple). he has one of the macbook pros they are hella nice laptops. The video guy in my office just got one as well (not the pro).

You chose well.

Hey, now that Macs run Unix, they can tap into a long history of smug attitude. :)
