Laying down the law
Apr. 7th, 2004 09:13 pmThere was a long discussion on the Evarayn ooc channel yesterday about suicide and why attempting it is illegal. I've known people who've tried to kill themselves, and I've known a very few who succeeded. I tried to do it myself once, a long time ago. It's an action I find selfish and repugnant and morally wrong (putting aside debate on such things as euthanasia, DNRs, etc). Yet, at the same time, I can't really put forth a strong argument as to why it should be illegal. I find myself feeling that way about a lot of things lately; things that, morally, I'm opposed to, but legally I don't think should be restricted. The fact is, in a society made up of people who choose different beliefs and ethical and moral codes, trying to make law based solely on a certain group's ethics can't be done if we want to maintain the rights and level of freedom that allows us to choose those sets of morals for ourselves in the first place.
I don't think I was going anywhere else with that. I just wanted to say it "out loud," so to speak.
